Civilian Ships' Officers contribute to Navy operations through their command, operation and control of Canadian Forces Auxiliary Vessels (CFAV) such as floating plants, passenger ferries, towboats and range vessels. They play a crucial role in supporting and maintaining the Fleet of the Canadian Navy and are located in Esquimalt, Nanoose and Halifax. Ships' Officers routinely engage in a multitude of marine-related activities and it is their responsibility to maintain the vessels and equipment and supervise the crew.
Ships' Officer training is specialized and practical in nature. The learning process involves hands-on experience at sea, training courses, and mentorship from senior officers. Ships' Officers also provide instruction in nautical studies at colleges offering marine curricula.
