The Department of National Defence (DND) is looking for qualified individuals to join the Policy Group at National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa, Ontario.
Individual assignments vary. In the Policy Group, policy officers work in areas such as policy development, strategic analysis, international security policy and parliamentary affairs. They may also be assigned to other organizations within National Defence Headquarters, or to another government department or agency. They research a broad range of issues, deliver oral briefings, and prepare a variety of written documents such as reports, analyses or speeches. These different assignments allow individuals to develop their analytic, interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills as well as their knowledge of policy development, machinery of government and issue management.
Policy officers begin at the EC-02 level and complete the programme by successfully competing in one of the Policy Group’s periodic promotion competitions, normally at the EC-05 level. Policy officers may participate in competitions at any time, provided that they meet the required qualifications.
Candidates must have a Master's degree. Experience researching and writing on subjects related to defence, security and/or government policy is an asset. Candidates must be proficient in either English or French. While Permanent residents may apply, preference will be given to Canadian citizens.
Approximately ten new policy officers are hired into the programme annually through a competition managed by the Directorate of Public Policy. Please visit the Policy Officer Recruitment Programme webpage for details about the next competition.
