Apprenticeship at Fleet Maintenance Facility Cape Breton, Esquimalt

Fleet Maintenance Facility CAPE BRETON (FMF CB) has maintained an apprenticeship training program since 1927 to sustain high standards of workmanship among its trades people. This program is jointly administered by FMF CB and Industry Training Authority, British Columbia (ITA BC). The Apprenticing Program trains workers to a high level of certification. Upon successful completion apprentices are entitled to the FMF CB Certificate of Apprenticeship, the Provincial Journeyperson's Certificate, and Inter-Provincial Certification (where applicable).

The prerequisite for all apprenticeships is grade 12 graduation or a PSC approved equivalent. Apprenticeship in electronics also requires a diploma in a two-year electronic technology program. While pre-apprenticeship training in specific trades is not mandatory, it is considered to be an asset for the applicant.

Apprenticeships are usually four years in duration, and commence in Spring and Fall of each year (with the exception of refrigeration mechanic where the apprenticeship is five years). We hire apprentices for the following trades:

  • Electrician
  • Electroplater
  • Electronic Technician
  • Joiner
  • Lagger
  • Machinist
  • Pipe Fitter
  • Rigger
  • Refrigeration Mechanic
  • Steel Fabricator/ Boilermaker
  • Sailmaker
  • Sheet Metal Fabricator

Apprenticeship recruitment takes place in the Spring and Fall. Trades apprenticeship competitions are posted at the Public Service Commission (PSC) for approximately three weeks before the competitions are closed. Applicants should routinely check the PSC website for Apprenticeship competitions.
